By: Maya Lovria 17-year-old Avery Grambs doesn’t stand out. She doesn’t strive for perfection, but rather finds a way to put in the least effort possible and still scrape an A. She has a simple plan: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. Ever since her mother died, Avery has been living with her step sister Libby, or at least she had been until Libby’s abusive boyfriend Drake moved in. Suddenly, Avery’s whole world is turned upside down by billionaire Tobias Hawthorne’s death; he gave Avery virtually everything, leaving his daughters and grandsons with only pocket change. There’s only one condition: to receive the inheritance, Avery must reside in the Hawthorne House for at least a year, and may not kick out any member of the Hawthorne family. But there’s one tiny problem: Avery has no idea who Tobias Hawthorne is, and she has no idea why he would give all of his possessions to her. Avery has to move into the Hawthorne House, an enormous, sprawling beast of a building, with secret passages, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, the rest of the recently disinherited Hawthornes reside in the house too, including Tobias Hawthorne’s four grandsons. Each of the boys were raised under the impression that they would one day inherit billions, so they are naturally rather suspicious of Avery. The second oldest grandson, Grayson, is convinced that she is a conwoman, and he is determined to take her down. Meanwhile, his brother, Jameson, believes that she is his grandfather's last game - a puzzle to figure out, a riddle to solve. It is he who will help her solve clues, and assist Avery in her quest to figure out why Tobias Hawthorne left it all to her. They find and solve riddles in the letters from Tobias Hawthorne included in his will, and from there solve puzzle after puzzle until Avery uncovers a major part of the answer - a terrible secret about two of the Hawthorne brothers. With danger and secrets around every corner, Avery must play the old man’s game to the very end, uncovering mysteries and solving puzzles to survive.
