By: Maya Lovria All has been well in Redwall Abbey, which is home to a variety of creatures, for many years. Mice, otters, moles, hares, squirrels, hedgehogs, shrews, birds, voles, and badgers all live together in peace. When one young mouse, by the name of Matthias, declares his admiration for the abbey’s long-deceased protector, Martin the Warrior, Abbot Mortimer assures him that the wild days of war are over, and that Redwall is devoted to ensuring the peace and safety of the inhabitants of nearby Mossflower woods. However, the Abbot is wrong. In St. Ninian’s abandoned church, trouble is brewing. A rat, by the name of Cluny the Scourge, is hidden with his group of evil followers, waiting for a chance to strike. He goes to Redwall and demands the surrender of the people, certain that the mice will give him what he wants. He is greatly shocked when they refuse and command him to leave. While Cluny is inside Redwall, he sees a tapestry hanging in the Great Hall. Embroidered on the tapestry is a picture of a mouse in armor, wielding a sword. Cluny is disturbed because he has been having nightmares of this very mouse! When he asks about him, he is told that this mouse is Martin the Warrior. Cluny hatches a plan to steal their beloved picture of Martin to crush their spirits and make them bend to his will. To his surprise, when he steals it, he accomplishes the opposite! The woodlanders, instead of surrendering, start preparing for war. Meanwhile, Matthias embarks on a quest to recover Martin’s sword to aid the war efforts. As the badgers, moles, hedgehogs, and mice repel Cluny’s attacks, Matthias searches for the lost sword. Matthias isn’t alone; he is aided as he solves riddles, faces off against fearsome creatures, and gains the skills he will need to become Redwall’s new champion and defeat Cluny once and for all.
